This is the second part of my conversation with #WalkAway Founder, Brandon Straka. We cover a wide range of topics and opinions and we have done little editing of his words except for grammar, spelling and flow. What you will read are his words, his thoughts, his opinions, unfettered by any biases. The feature is much longer than our typical coverage, but we did not want to inadvertently alter the tone through the editing process.
As controversial as you may think he is, I encourage you to read what he has to say and keep an open mind.
In the end it is incumbent on all of us to do our own due diligence of the facts and truth in order to have an educated opinion regardless of ideology or affiliation. I want to thank Brandon Straka for taking the time to answer our questions and share his motivations and personal history leading up to this moment.
Why did you make your video?
First of all, in my video for many of the points I include supporting video footage of things that are actually happening or headlines in the news which illustrate the points that I’m making in the video. But, even for the ones that don’t have footage to back it up, everything that I said in my video are the result of things that have happened directly to me in my life, not things that I have heard about or read about, but rather what I have seen or heard with my own eyes and ears. I watched this change come over people and I describe this in my video, the reason why the video is so successful in my opinion is because of the millions of other people who have watched the exact same thing happen. People on the Left can deny it all they want, say it’s not true, it’s not happening, but my video has over 10 million views and I believe the reason why people love it and read the comments and I have read a lot of the comments, which are 99 percent supportive if not more.
I encourage anyone to go onto my social media, which is now public. I’ve been on Facebook for more than 10 years, since 2007. Anyone is welcome to go back and look and pay particular attention to my posts in the year 2016 and see what I am posting. It’s Hillary Clinton for months after the election. I have so many videos on Facebook after the election of me crying because Donald Trump has been elected and devastated and horrified and I also started that group Americans for Gay Quality.
That’s the group that I started in 2010 or somewhere around that time. I kept that group going for several years. I have pictures of myself attending gays against gays against guns rallies where I mindlessly marched along with gays against the gun, anti 2nd Amendment rallies, because why? Because I don’t know, I liked the tee shirt? No, because I was a gay and that’s what other gay people were doing. So, I have so much evidence that I can produce for anybody to support that background.
I was a liberal before because I thought that liberalism was about freedom. I thought it was about literally pushing, pushing the bounds, I think of societal parameters toward more freedom. I thought it was about ultimate freedom of speech, freedom of expression, inclusivity and diversity. I thought it was about supporting and nurturing all people and making sure that all people have the same opportunities and equality. That’s what I thought liberalism was about. And I think that at that time it largely was about that. If I were to look back, I would look and I’d be like, oh, okay, well I’m just sad. I mean, I know that I used to support affirmative action which was a very liberal policy and now I can see that that’s actually a very detrimental policy. All of the thinking behind it came from good people and a good place when people came first came up with this idea.
Those are the kinds of causes that I used to support at that time. I think liberalism is now the opposite. It’s actually, in my mind, it now reminds me of what I used to think conservatism was like when I was a kid, which is pushing against freedom of speech. Liberalism in my opinion is about trying to control people’s behavior. It’s about maximizing the amount of government influence on people’s lives while minimizing personal freedom. It’s about engaging in an ideology which encourages violence and vandalism and GroupThink and the Tribal mentality, Identity politics and Political Correctness and all of the things which only divide us and make us hate each other and keep us from ever being able to work together in unity and fellowship and brotherhood, it’s insanity!
I think that we have a very serious job to do and getting something that has gotten out of control back under control and then moving forward. And when I say that, what I mean is that right now the Democrats seem to think that the most important thing, most pressing issues in this country are impeaching, a President. Looking after the rights of illegal immigrants and putting their needs above the needs of the American people. I think it’s again about just completely over the top embracing identity politics and political correctness, which again is just oppressiveness and censorship and their obsession with news stories that aren’t real. The Republican party is pushing back hard on all of those things. The Republican party is all about national sovereignty as opposed to globalism. They’re all about pushing for freedom of open dialogue and debate and expression, which is exactly the opposite of what liberals want right now. They’re all about empowering the individual as opposed to encouraging people to group off and create a hierarchy of victimhood and oppression.
I do think that there was a time when the Republican party was completely controlled by the religious fundamentalists and the religious right and I think that they became obsessed for a time with morality and sort of overreached into people’s personal lives and I wasn’t a Republican at that time and I opposed that, I still oppose that, but that’s not who they are today. That’s not what they’re about anymore. I mean, that’s the whole point, is that people need to understand, gay people need to understand that first and foremost, they are born free. In the United States, you as an individual come first, you come before any political party, before any ideology because you were born a free individual.
I think that a lot of gay people don’t understand that they don’t owe allegiance to anybody for anything that they’ve ever done. Even if people want to believe in and it’s extremely debatable, but if people want to believe that the Democratic party has been so amazing for gay people, well good for them. That’s how it should have been in the first place. No one was ever supposed to oppress us. No one was ever supposed to make our lives difficult. No one was ever supposed to hurt us, but people did and that’s largely over now. We have to, as a gay community overcome many obstacles that are in our path, we do not owe the rest of our lives to the Democratic party because they may have pretended or even really to a certain degree, looked out for us. We need to be more focused on today and I myself am more focused on the future.
I don’t owe my allegiance to any party. All I care about is what’s happening today and what’s happening today is sheer and utter insanity on the Left, which by the way, is only going to serve to, in time, create more danger for minority groups. The Republican party does not care if people are dating and despite what the left wants you to believe, they don’t want to hurt gay people. They don’t want to roll back time. They don’t want to take gay marriage way. They don’t want to hurt us or anybody else. They actually are all about empowering the individual. And that’s a message that every gay person should be excited about. I mean, this is exactly what we fought all these years for, to get to a place where we as individuals could and can be viewed as individuals and not just members of a group that people hate, but that’s where we are. Now they still want to just keep jumping back on that tree of just being like, no, no, no, we’re oppressed the oppressed where victims, NO, you’re not, you’re not!
Nobody cares anymore and this is why we have to have all these stupid bullshit groups now like non-binary and gender fluid. They literally have to make it up now so that they can say and they have to keep adding letters to the acronym LGBTQA2++ whatever. They have to keep doing that so they can say, ah, see! They’re oppressing our community. They’re oppressing our community. No, they’re really not. The only reason you feel like they are oppressing our community is because people are making up fake conditions that aren’t real and pretending like they have no gender and people aren’t buying it because it’s fake and that is not oppression and that has nothing to do with me being gay. I mean, if you feel like you don’t have a gender or that sometimes you’re a man and sometimes you’re a woman depending on what fucking time it is. That has nothing to do with me being gay. So don’t call yourself a part of my community and don’t tell me that I’m oppressed as being under the umbrella of your oppression.
I’ll tell you about the number of cases, legitimate cases that I heard in 2018 of people being attacked or oppressed or chased after because they’re gay and it doesn’t even begin to compare to what is actually happening right now today to many conservatives. I literally, this week alone, I have read and watched on video, I am not making it up, I’m happy to provide video evidence of dozens of conservatives who have been physically attacked, kicked out of restaurants chased down the street. Brian a person I met, told me he was an Anchor from Fox News and was chased into the subway by some Liberal idiot who screamed at him and called him names and then encouraged everyone else on the train to do it too and it was all on video. They called him names, berated him during his entire ride home just because he works for Fox News, so I don’t want to hear it, you know, gay people and whatever. There is a handful of gay people, whatever they’re going through because I don’t see of those people standing up to say, don’t be doing this, that the conservative community, don’t they? I mean the conservative community is doing nothing to gay people and that’s what I see in hear about all the time. I myself, I was never denied service in the store as a gay man and I have experienced homophobia by the way.
I do know that homophobia exists. I’ve been, I’ve experienced violence. Things that have happened as a result of me being gay or being around other gay people, but I’ve never in my life been denied service in a store until I became a conservative. I went into a store in New York City the other fucking day and the man behind the counter denies any purchase because I’m with the walkaway campaign. Said he wouldn’t serve me at a camera store. So I mean, give me a break. I mean, listen, you can’t call yourself an oppressed class of people if your now the ones in the position of doing the oppressing. Okay?
The Walkway campaign is, I’m obviously the head of it, but, I have a team of volunteers at this point and they’re amazing and we hope in time to become a profitable organization in which people can have a job and you know, that we become either a nonprofit organization or a hybrid pack. We’re trying to figure it out. We hope to get some sponsorships and donors and actually become a functioning organization that employs people.
I want to assure the readers of KWIR that #WalkAway is a legitimate movement, it’s not a Russian bot as people have tried to say. It’s not truthful that we were hijacked by the Russians, believe me for a long time I wanted people to come in and say, hey, we love what you’re doing. Let us help you make this much bigger than it already is. That has not happened, there have been some people who’ve come in and wanted to take it to use it or take ownership of it, but they don’t want to give anything in return. Many of them are in a position to do so but still did nothing. Now, I was very smart when I started this because I looked around and I recognized what had happened with other movements. Black Lives Matter, the Tea Party, various other movements which started off maybe with a certain intent and then completely fell apart because there was never clear leadership, there was never clear ownership then people kind of jumped in and said like, no, I’m the Tea Party, you know, I’m the Black Lives Matter, no!, I’m Black Lives Matter. And then you’ve got all these different people with all these different missions and some of them are lunatics, you know, claiming that they are the leader of this or that organization. So what I did was I immediately, when I created a trademark to hashtag I copyrighted my video and I created and I hired an intellectual property Attorney and I had everything connected with the campaign protected legally through intellectual property protection and so after if I want to expand on that a little bit, I could.
The growth of the #WaklkAway movement is 100 percent organic? I have never even spent money on promotions like social media, you know, how you can push your groups and stuff through whatever. I’ve never even done that with the campaign and nobody has come in and given us any sponsorships. Nobody has come in as a donor or a, you know, a benefactor in any way, shape or form with the campaign. Believe me, I would have encouraged it to happen, and I still encourage anyone to take a look at what we’re doing and realize that if we can have some support, I mean we have reached, at this point a 400,000 people on social media and we’ve done that with no financial backing whatsoever. I mean, imagine what we could do if someone came in and said, let us help you produce television commercials, let us help you. Even with our email list of our donors, whatever, that has never happened. All of the money we’ve raised for the campaign so far has been completely grassroots using Gofund me and using a PayPal account. Crowdfunding amounts have been mostly $20, $25, maybe $50 here and there. We’ve raised a decent amount of money. I’m very proud of what we’ve done, but it has not been any major donors including from the RNC which has been a complete letdown. In spite of that, I believe we’ve raised around $300,000. The majority of the funds raised will go to this event that we’re, we’re having, the March on Washington. Yeah. We’re doing a gala dinner at Trump International hotel on Friday night. We’re doing the march and rally on Saturday and we’re doing a closing brunch also at Trump International on Sunday and I hope in my heart that we have thousands. I hope we have the tens or hundreds of thousands. I hope a million people show up, but I, I have no way of knowing.
It’s true that we haven’t gotten a lot of coverage in the liberal media, absolutely true. Believe me, I have tried and I would welcome any Liberal media of course reaching out to me for, listen, they’ve written stories about it. They’ve never, there’s not one person from the Liberal media that just reached out to me for a comment or an Interview. What they do is they write stories saying that were all Russian bots that we’re paid actors that we use stolen pictures from Shutterstock with fake testimonials on them. So no, they don’t talk to me and they don’t talk about the WalkAway campaign other than to just say it’s a joke and it’s like a fake thing that isn’t really happening. It’s also true that we haven’t reached nearly enough people who only have eyes and ears on the Liberal media because the Liberal media isn’t telling our story. They are simply not telling it. Now that being said, that doesn’t mean we haven’t reached Liberals. What I mean by that is that we’ve reached Liberals through social media. We reach Liberals through YouTube, through Facebook, through Twitter, through Instagram. We have reached a lot of Liberals and all anyone needs to do is go to the #WalkAway campaign page, read the written testimonials which are right there or the watch the videos produced by these former Liberals. The videos are there for people who are walking away from the Democratic party and walking away from Liberalism to view. Yes, we have reached a lot of people and frankly it’s miraculous what we’ve been able to do considering that we have gotten no media support whatsoever from certainly from the left and not even really enough from the right.
I can tell you that I’m the demographic that I believe is pretty representational of the actual breakdown of demographics in America. We have a small percentage of minorities and LGBT people, but the majority of people in our movement I think are heterosexual. I also think the majority of the people are probably white, although I couldn’t say that for certain, but it’s not as though, I mean just about every group that you can imagine is represented in some form. We have Muslims, we have Asian people, we have straights and gays, we have Drag Queens, we have Transsexual people and Transgendered people, we even have people who identify as non binary, which I’ve gone on record as saying I don’t think it’s real, but we absolutely welcome any of those people into the group, but no, there’s, there’s no scientific breakdown. I’m just, you know, it’s just like if you went to a dinner or a social event, you look and you see that there’s like a small amount of gay people in the room, a small amount of minority people in the room but the majority of the people are white and straight. That’s life in America and that’s kinda what the group is.
People ask me what I expected when I started this movement. I don’t think that I expected to be so warmly and loved and embraced the way that I have been. it’s been incredible. The reception that I received from everyone Right or Left. I mean, there are people in the Center, you know, there are people in the Right, there are even people on the far right and all of them write to me and tell me that, um, that they love what I’m doing, that they’re proud of me, proud of the campaign, that they have hope that the first time in years for the country again and where we’re headed, that they feel like this campaign is going to save America. And I don’t think that I expected it to touch people as much as it has.
In terms of New York city, the truth is I work all the time now at this point. I love it and I love what I’m doing. I love working on this, but I don’t know. I don’t go out to dinner anymore and I don’t go to bars and I don’t know, I just don’t. I mean, so to be honest with you, I don’t really have that great of a gauge as to how my life has changed in New York City because I run out and get groceries and say I’m running out and running errands because I have to go to DC tomorrow, but nobody seems to recognize me today or anything, so that’s fine. But the gay community here have been kind of horrible. I mean NBC Out did a story on me and I actually felt like it was as good as it could be. I mean, it was, it was still a mild hit piece, but it could’ve been much worse. When that article, I wanted to do that article because I hadn’t until that point had direct line to the gay community to be able to explain to them what I’m doing and why I’m saying what I’m saying and why I think this is important for all of us to consider. When the article first came out, the comments were like 100 percent horrible and disappointing. I mean, it was like, it was just the same old petty bullshit. It’s making fun of my face, making fun of my hair, making fun of what I was wearing, making fun of just like a personal attacks. And then, and then some of it too was you know, that I’m very stupid that I need to educate myself, that I’m a failed actor and they’re paying me money, just really, really catty, nasty personal attacks like that. None of it, I don’t think anyone ever like actually had a debate about any of the political points I was making or any sort of, you know, intellectual disagreement with my opinions. So it was really just a lot of superficial attacks.
I think when it first started happening, I was really, I’m very concerned because I didn’t feel like I would, I mean this is also, we’re not even five months old yet. We’re like the last campaign. It’s not even five months old. So when those attacks first started happening, it was probably within the first two months of the attacks on our campaign and I was very concerned that it would have a negative effect on my supporters in the campaign and that they would, it would cause them to question me or have doubts or skepticism about me. I think what has now happened since then is that people who do support me or you know, have been members of the campaign have seen now for months and months and months, how diligently and laser focused I am working on this campaign. I don’t get any rest, I’m working my heart out. I’m breaking my heart every day for this campaign. And I don’t think that there’s anything that the Left can do at this point that can hurt me. I do think it’s unfortunate that they lie, they lie about everything. They’re not just lying about me. It’s not like they’re picking on me personally. It’s like this is just what they do. But, I think it’s unfortunate that it’s going to further delay progress for LGBT people or maybe minorities or any people on the left from being able to objectively look at what I’m doing and consider for themselves that there’s something to it and maybe they should consider being a part of it as well. But I’m, I’m not worried that it’ll hurt me, because it won’t.
I am a TRUMP Supporter. The reason why is because, oh my god, where do I, where do we start? Um, I think he’s doing an amazing job as President. I think our country is going in an incredible direction. I think that people are doing really well. I think that the country is starting to wake up. They’re starting to see all the lies and the manipulations that have taken place on the Left. I think minorities are starting to get it. I think LGBT people are starting to get it. I think Black people are especially starting to get it and we know this because if you’re African American, support for Trump in your community has gone from 15 percent a year ago to over 35 percent today and then on a more sort of superficial level, I mean it’s just, he’s just like so much fun. I mean, if Liberals could just get over it and like stop being such a fucking babies and lunatics just gonna be like, this should be one of the most fun times we have the most fun President we’ve ever had. Like chill the fuck out and enjoy it, you know?
I have heard that many people think that this movement will disappear after the midterms. I think that’s wishful thinking on a lot of people’s part. We have plans, as I said, I think we want to become a non-profit organization, we want to be a great source of truth that people can depend on, whether it involves creating outstanding video content or our amazing WalkAway speakers. I want to get on the road to college campuses and to public speaking events and rallies telling sharing stories about why many people have walked away. We want to have really outstanding news, sources of independent journalism debunking media lies and myths searching for the truth. There’s a lot of things that we want to do with the campaign and I think that will definitely be a force going forward. People take us seriously and I take this movement seriously.
I have wondered since starting this campaign why the Democratic party hasn’t contacted me to say, you know, let’s take a look at what you’re saying and what the people in your group are saying and learn how we can do better. How can we improve ourselves? No, not at all.
I realize that the LGBT community others think I am a traitor or worse but, it’s just gonna take time. I mean, this is not. First of all, I didn’t wake up overnight and I didn’t change my mind about things overnight and so I can’t and don’t expect other people to do the same. I know how gay people are, you know, these sort of personal attacks and superficial attacks and ad hominem attacks. These are attack methods that I’ve used myself, you know, and so I get it and I just try not to take it too seriously and not to take it too personally and just remind myself when people react negatively towards me, first of all, you can see clearly they’re just engaging in the GroupThink and they’re scared. They’re afraid of having their core belief system challenged. It’s a scary thing, but it’s just, I recognize that there’s a lot of work to do and it’s going to take time and part of that is going to be building trust. I mean, you know, if they’re afraid and I understand why they’re afraid, I was afraid too, but, you know, I guess I want them to see they don’t have to be afraid. There’s nothing to be afraid of. No one’s trying to hurt the LGBT community and no one’s trying to roll people’s rights back. The world has changed. I mean, the world has changed and it’s like this should be a very exciting time in every LGBT persons life, but they’re not ready to accept and embrace that yet and I’m trying to help that along.
My last comment is this. People have asked me if I have heard directly from President Trump and all I can tell you is that I’ve heard through the grapevine that the President is aware of us. I know that his children are aware of us because I’ve heard directly from somebody who has talked to them that, that they think of what we’re doing is great. I’ve also heard from other people too that the President is aware of us and supports us, but I don’t know that firsthand. I don’t know if that that’s true. I have not met the man yet, but I hope to someday. I have not talked to him and so I try not to believe too much about what people say he is saying or thinking until such time when I can hear it from his lips.
