Chinese Fashion Designer Xander Zhou debuted his 2019 Spring & Summer Menswear Collection with a vision of the future that many were not expecting.
During Xander Zhou’s London Menswear Fashion Show, the progressive thinking designer strapped fake potbellies onto his male models to give the illusion that they were with child.
In the video, you can see Xander Zhou’s male models holding their stomachs to give the impression that they are cradling their unborn child while they show off garments from his new menswear line.
The bold concept is Xander Zhou’s futuristic vision and interpretation of what is yet to come if we dare to think of the alternative possibilities of life and evolution.
To bring the concept back to the present, it also serves as the visual representation to his newly released 2019 Spring and Summer Collection, New World Baby.
Besides the shock of the male pregnancies and other off-the-wall concepts like men with multiple arms, Xander Zhou’s garments throughout the show were a mix of conventional male apparel with brave new designs in terms of menswear.
In his own words Xander Zhou told WWD, “If you want to go futuristic, it’s quite easy to go extreme. It’s more challenging to create something wearable.”
Xander Zhou is unique in that he was the first to usher pregnant males down the runway, however, he wasn’t the first in the model pregnancy trend as reported by fashionista.com.
Remember when cool-kid brands like Eckhaus Latta, Glossier and Opening Ceremony made a splash last fall by featuring very pregnant models on the runway or in their ad campaigns? As of now, it looks like the trend of glamorizing pregnancy has officially made its way into menswear, too, with the appearance of male models wearing prosthetic baby bumps during the Xander Zhou presenation at London Fashion Week Men’s.
It will be interesting to see if Xander Zhou male futuristic pregnancy trends with others emulating his concept or whether it will stand historically as the first and last time we see pregnant men in fashion.
