Senator Cory Booker made sure to question Michael Pompeo on his anti-LGBT stance during the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director’s Secretary of State confirmation hearing.
President Trump selected CIA Director Michael Pompeo as his pick for Secretary of State. But before Pompeo can assume the role, he has to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
We here at KWIR Media reported on Saturday, April 7, 2018, that GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, took note of the pending confirmation hearing and jumped into action launching an #AskPompeo initiative to bring attention to Pompeo’s anti-LGBT ways, including his ties to anti-LGBT companies and organizations.
A big part of GLAAD’s #AskPompeo initiative was for the U.S. Senate to imply pusher on Pompeo during his confirmation hearing. The LGBT non-profit organization even hand-delivered specific questions to the offices of all 21 members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations with the hope that at least one of the committee members would pose the questions to Pompeo publicly during the hearing.
When the time came U.S. Senator from New Jersey Cory Booker stood up to the plate and grilled Pompeo on his anti-LGBT beliefs asking, “is being gay a perversion?” It’s a question that Senator Booker asked based off of a quoted statement from Pompeo.
Although it’s not one of the specific questions GLAAD hand-delivered, it was a question to test Pompeo’s response to LGBT issues in a public forum in which Pompeo answered by ducking and dodging. However, Senator Booker would not let up and Pompeo’s true feelings were revealed for all to hear.
Here’s the exchange reported by cbsnews.com:
Pompeo says he stands by view against same-sex marriage
Pompeo, pressed by Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, said he holds the same belief now that he did in Congress, when he opposed same-sex marriage.
But Pompeo said there are married gay couples in the CIA, and he treated them no differently.
“I treated them with the exact same sight of rights,” he said.
Asked if he believes gay sex is a perversion, Pompeo said he would give the same answer that he had earlier, declining to answer the question head-on.
