The spin-off to the canceled Roseanne revival sitcom is set to premiere on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at 8:00 pm, 7:00 pm central.
The ABC 1990s hit show popped up back on the scene with rave reviews and an 18.2 million viewership that rivaled it’s past 1997 finale numbers by 10% when it debuted on March 27, 2018.
However, the hit sitcom was canceled after its successful revived season when the lead actress of the show, Roseanne Barr, made a seemingly racial comment about former President Obama’s adviser Valerie Jarret.
Barr’s controversial tweet commenting that Jarrett is a product of the Mulsim Brotherhood and the Planet of the Apes spread like wildfire and as a consequence for her offputting comment she was fired from the show.
Subsequently, it was thought that the show itself would be no more even after being picked up for a second season before the unfortunate drama began. But the other actors fought to keep the show alive and they won.
The spin-off show minus Barr, now titled The Conners, will include all the show’s regulars like funny lady Jackie and sarcastic mom Darlene. Plus, her gender non-conforming son Mike, which we couldn’t be happier to hear about.
9-year-old Mike gives the show an LGBTQI element that can penetrate the homes of many that watch the show who might otherwise never get to experience firsthand the life of a gender non-conforming person.
In the first revival season of the Roseanne show, youngster Mike’s storyline tackled bullying and the courage to be oneself, which was difficult for the character who in the show likes to wear clothes that society deems as “girl clothing.”
What this season holds for Mike, we do not know. But what we do know is that for the second season in row viewers across America will get to witness the life of a gender non-conforming youth.
We can only hope the storyline allows more people to understand this one aspect of the LGBTQI experience.
