If you haven’t seen the critically acclaimed show yet, we highly suggest you tune in. On its third season, the show continues to provide sensational moments in every episode that tugs at the heartstrings and puts viewers in an emotional state.
In this one particular episode that aired on November 27, 2018, before the show’s winter break, a heartfelt moment personified the essence of the captivating show — profound and shocking moments with depth and clarity. Tess the daughter of Randall and Beth comes out to her parents.
The way the scene played out was magnificent, a tribute to the genius of the show’s talented writers. But what the scene also represented was a raw and rare depicton of a lesbian’s coming out story. We as a society have seen so many scenarios in which a guy comes out that we tend to forget that the duanting yet freeing moment belong to women as well.
Young girls and women struggle with their sexual orientation and the acceptence of it all too. They are plagued with the notion of societal intolerance just like men who fear negative reactions to their sexual revelation. The emotional exchange also tackles the trepidation gays experience while exposing their truth even with loving people that care for them.
Throughout the seasons, affection and love has always been displayed for teenage Tess by her parents. So why such the anguish, guilt and torment ravishing Tess’ mind and physical being? Because the notion of being gay, although, increasingly accepted still is stigmizied universally, and that can be seen and felt by gays both young and grown.
Tess recieving acceptance from her parent’s response is a wonderful example of love and compassion. But it’s far from the end of her journey. Her truth, as for many gays, will be bashed, shunned, critisized and diminished from possibly family members, friends, nieghbors, acquintances and strangers.
We can only hope that for her and all others battling with their sexuality that their resilence within themselves keeps them safe and strong to find the loving space and community that accepts and cherishes them for who they are.
